Chapter Eleven

Abigail woke to the touch of Angel’s wet nose on her cheek. She reached her arm out of the covers and petted Angel on the side of her neck, careful not to jingle the tags on her collar. Angel settled on her hind legs and patiently waited for Abigail to rise out of bed, but Abigail was not anxious to start her day. She would have been just fine to stay safe under the covers next to Jeremiah’s warm body. Her mind wandered to what it would be like to stop time. When she was much younger, she read a fantasy book about a woman who found a stopwatch buried in her garden and then was able to freeze everything, making time stand still, by simply uttering the word “stop.” Abigail was fascinated by the story and because the woman quickly found out the consequences of stopping time, she learned the values of perseverance and inner strength.

Abigail decided that is exactly what she would pray for this morning. She would need an abundance of perseverance and inner strength to head back into town with Rose. Abigail had finally finished crocheting the requested pieces in her craft order for Everything’s a Gift, and she needed to drop them off to the store later that morning. Her sales were slowly improving, and she wanted to make sure she kept up the momentum.

And as much as she dreaded it, she knew that she needed to have a conversation with her closest friend in Billingsley. She was going to have to tell Rose about her conversation with the police. And another pit formed in her stomach just thinking about it.

Angel let out a quiet whine and was on her feet again, so Rose pushed the covers away from her face and slowly stood to her feet. She bent down and gave Angel a kiss on the cheek before pointing and whispering in her ear to meet her at the front door. Angel bounded off, excited to go on a walk, and Abigail made her way to the bathroom before getting dressed.

Abigail said her prayers on her morning walk, grateful for all the beauty in her life and in nature. By the time she had arrived back at the house and ate breakfast with her family, her mood was lifted and she felt optimistic about the day ahead of her. She sent the kids to school with full bellies, backpacks, and lunch boxes, and she waved goodbye from the front porch to Jeremiah as he drove away in the family’s horse and buggy. She had sent a cold lunch with her husband this time since she wasn’t sure if she would make it to Prairie Leather in time to bring him something warm.

Just as she finished cleaning the kitchen, she glanced out the front windows and spotted Rose pulling up to her house in her buggy. She opened the door and waved.

“Gut mariye!” Rose called out. “I’m a little early today,” she explained, “but no rush.
